{"id":287,"date":"2011-10-24T08:59:10","date_gmt":"2011-10-24T16:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gm.sagotsky.com\/?p=287"},"modified":"2011-10-24T08:59:10","modified_gmt":"2011-10-24T16:59:10","slug":"a-quick-observation-on-what-the-players-get-out-of-the-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gm.sagotsky.com\/?p=287","title":{"rendered":"A quick observation on what the players get out of the game."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I finally hung out with my players again.\u00c2\u00a0 Game ended two months ago and I&#8217;ve been reclusive since then.\u00c2\u00a0 They were telling some other friends stories about the game.<\/p>\n<p>Without fail, all of their stories were player driven.\u00c2\u00a0 None of the plots that I wrote were retold.\u00c2\u00a0 Everything the PCs told our friends was a situation where they decided something had to happen and took the initiative to see it through.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not griping that they don&#8217;t appreciate my stories, quite the opposite.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m proud of them for leading the narrative.\u00c2\u00a0 And I&#8217;m pleased with myself for giving them the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>But I want to emphasis that GMs who shut down their players in favor of a preconceived story are selfish.\u00c2\u00a0 Your players are not an audience.\u00c2\u00a0 If they want a story on rails, they&#8217;ll read a book, watch a movie, or play a video game.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re roleplaying because they want control over the story.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;ll remember those times you let them drive the story.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;ll also remember those times you shut down their plans to go off rails, but not in a good way<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I finally hung out with my players again.\u00c2\u00a0 Game ended two months ago and I&#8217;ve been reclusive since then.\u00c2\u00a0 They were telling some other friends stories about the game.
